Silver Lakes Solar Project is First for New Net Energy Metering Aggregate Program (NEMA)

The 831-kW solar plant is the first to be built in South California Edison's territory

A new solar project in Silver Lakes, a planned community of more than 3,000 residences in San Bernardino County, Calif., will be the first to take advantage of Southern California Edison's new NEMA program. A revolutionary step forward for distributed solar generation, this program allows a utility customer, such as Silver Lakes' homeowners association, to use electricity from a solar facility on its property to offset electricity usage from multiple meters located on contiguous properties owned or leased by the customer.

Clean power generated by the 831-kW PV system will offset electricity consumed by Silver Lakes' community amenities, such as pools, clubhouses, restaurants and sports facilities. Construction will commence in October, with completion expected by the end of the year.

The project was developed by SK Solar, who gave shape to the unique net metering opportunity, pulling together various partners to create a viable solution for engineering, permitting, financing and ultimately, construction. As one important piece of the puzzle, Silver Lakes has entered a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Pacific Power Renewables, which will allow the homeowners association to see savings in the first year of solar production. Throughout the life of the PPA, Silver Lakes will experience total estimated savings of over $3 million thanks to this innovative net metering program and PPA set-up.

What is the State of the Market for Home Solar Energy Storage?

We’re just a quarter of the way through 2014, but this year clearly is shaping up as the year of home energy storage.

The past few weeks alone have featured major investment bank, think tank and energy agency reports on the threats and opportunities of battery-backed solar electric systems; regulatory hearings and high-level discussions on potential conflicts with utilities; storage-focused trade missions by California energy commissioners and Canada’s head of state; an international conference keynoted by Germany’s energy minister; as well as new incentives, new product launches and the opening of an energy-efficient prototype home that combines on-site solar with battery storage and electric vehicle charging.

Indeed, the already widely recognized battery storage buzz quickly is morphing into a deafening roar.

Amid all this activity, it can be difficult to decipher which home energy storage options actually exist today from those on the way and those possibly not – or at least not yet.

Home energy storage systems, of course, are nothing new. They have been around since the dawn of terrestrial solar power. From the pioneering late 1970s into the 1990s, most residential photovoltaic systems were off-the-grid projects supported by lead-acid batteries. In the United States, in fact, it wasn’t until 2002 that the cumulative installed capacity of grid-tied, distributed solar electric systems actually surpassed that of battery-backed off-grid solar homes, according to International Energy Agency (IEA) data. 1MW Commercial Solar Project Completed in Mexico

SK Solar and Creotecc complete a 1MW Solar Installation in Mexico

SK Solar and Creotecc Solar Mounting Systems announce the completion of a 1MW solar ground mount array for a large national retail chain in Mexico.

The 1MW Creoterra fixed ground mount system was installed in just 10 days by a 12-man crew, and features Solon modules and Advanced Energy (REFUsol) inverters.

Creotecc was responsible for coordination and training of racking assembly for crews from SK Solar and Solarscape. SK Solar was responsible for engineering, layout, pile driving, mounting system assembly, panelization, and DC and AC wiring.

The flat land provided good ground for pile driving, and heavy equipment was limited to the pile driving machine and a forklift to unload and distribute the aluminum rail and modules.

This installation is the first phase of a 6MW project.

Hermosillo, Mexico – January 28, 2014 – SK Solar and Creotecc Solar Mounting Systems announce the completion of a 1 MW solar ground mount array for a large national retail chain in Mexico.

The 1 MW CREOTERRA fixed ground mount system was installed in just 10 days by a 12-man crew, and features Solon modules and Advanced Energy (REFUsol) inverters.
